Welcome to St. John the Baptist – Gildehaus Catholic Church and Parish.
The parish was founded over 175 years ago as a Jesuit Mission. About 150 years ago, the church building was burned to the ground during the civil war. The church was rebuilt and still stands today. Modern conveniences have been added, of course, like electricity, an audio system, and an electric organ. However, some of the old still remains…like an original beam that still supports the loft that you will notice as you enter the church.
Why “-Gildehaus”? Why not just “St. John the Baptist”? When St. John’s was founded over 175 years ago, all the land of the parish was donated by the Gildehaus family. One condition of the donation was that their name be part of the parish name. Hence, the -Gildehaus.
